Abstract

The fish of the species Xiphophorus birchmanni, inhabit shallow rocky streams, are native to the Panuco River basin, this species is presenting threats such as hybridization and population decline, these effects may be a result of increased anthropogenic activities, within water bodies or carrying runoff pollutants, increasing the concentrations of toxic substances including heavy metals such as Pb, Cr and Ni, said elements being toxic to the growth and survival of aquatic organisms. The aim of this study was to determine concentrations of Pb, Cr and Ni in muscle and guts of fish of the species Xiphophorus birchmanni. Fish were collected in March 2012, three sampling locating in the town of Calnali, Edo. Hidalgo, part of the Panuco River subbasin. Muscle and guts were removed from the fish, dried in an oven and subsequently microwave digested with nitric acid. The analysis of heavy metals was determined in the atomic absorption spectrophotometry, SpectrAA model 880, Varian Instrument brand. Finding the average concentrations of Pb> Ni> Cr, both in muscle and in guts.
