Abstract

In this study we determined the content of total sugars and reducing sugars of different genotypes producing xoconostle cactus (Opuntia spp.) Collected at locations in the states of Hidalgo, State of Mexico and Zacatecas, Mexico. The variables evaluated were: total soluble solids, reducing sugars and total sugars. The results showed statistically significant differences (P <0.05) in the total sugar content in the mesocarp (pulp) of the fruits of Xoconostle fruits of 'Manso', 'Cueron' and 'Invierno' values of 0.65, 0.61 and 0.60 mg•g-1 and from the fruits of 'Virgen' and ‘cuaresmeño Zacatecano´ with 0.30 and 0.26 mg·g-1. The highest content of total sugars was observed in the fruits of Xoconostle 'Ulapa' and 'Cambray' values of 1.3 and 0.91 mg•g-1. In relation to reducing sugar content in the mesocarp (pulp) of xoconostles, there were no statistically significant differences, with values ranging from 0.13 to 0.18 mg•g-1 except in the mesocarp (pulp) of fruits of Xoconostle Ulapa (O. Först Oligacantha CF) 1.3 mg•g-1. The highest value in the reducing sugar content was observed in the mesocarp of fruits of Xoconostle 'Ulapa' value of 0.84 mg•g-1. The highest content of total soluble solids (°Brix) was observed in Xoconostle 'Manzano' The highest content of total sugars and reducing sugars was observed in the fruits of Xoconostle ‘Ulapa'.
