Abstract

In México, fish are a diverse group that has been investigated parasitologically more than any other, but many endemic species have not been studied. Fish serve as definitive, intermediate, and paratenic hosts of helminths. The structure of their helminth communities depends on factors that include the particular attributes of the host, the environment, and host-parasite relationships. The objective of this study was to describe the community structure of the helminths of Xiphophorus birchmanni, Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculata y Amantitlania nigrofasciata, sympatric species in the San Pedro (Río Huazalingo) and Huiznopala (Río Atlapexco) Rivers. Fish were collected in 2008-2009 and examined and helminths were processed and identified taxonomically. Diversity indices were calculated. Seven species of helminth were collected: Centrocestus formosanus, Uvulifer sp., Girodactilidae sp., Urocleidoides vaginoclastrum, Rhabdochona sp., R. kidderi y Spinitectus sp. Monogeneans were the most abundant and were dominant in the comunities, especially in that of X. birchmanni and Nematoda were best represented. The community of X. birchmanni was the richest, but overall the comunities were poor and highly dominated by monogeneans. The influences of host specificity and food habits on community structure are discussed.
