The cats are a species that causes problems for human health due to their high prolificacy, as well as irreversible damage to endemic fauna as they are natural hunters. Strategies such as shelters, surgical sterilization and chemical sterilization are used to control feline overpopulation. However, sterilization can predispose animals to obesity. The aim of the study was to demonstrate the relationship between surgical sterilization and weight gain in male cats after the surgical process. Fourteen clinically healthy crossbred male cats were used. The animals were weighed individually before surgery and after the surgical procedure were monitored for three months, recording their weight every week. The results obtained showed an increase in weight after surgery, significant differences were observed (P <0.05) between the initial average weight (3.0 ± 1.1) and the final average weight of the cats (4.6 ± 0.8). It was also determined that there is a positive correlation (r2 = 0.236) between the increase weight of cats and the days after the surgical process. Likewise, a linear relationship with a positive slope (r = 0.486) between the weight of the cats and the days after surgical sterilization was observed. It is concluded that cats tend to gain weight after orchiectomy, as they ingest a greater amount of energy that exceeds their nutritional needs, resulting in the formation of fatty deposits that influence the increase in body condition.
