Management Units for the Conservation of Wild Fauna in the State of Yucatán in the period from 1997 to 2022

Abstract

The Management Units for the Conservation of Wildlife or UMA and Land and Facilities for the Management of Wildlife or PIMVS arise as a strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of wild fauna and flora in Mexico. The objective of this work was to evaluate the trend of the formation of new units since its creation in 1997 until 2022 and other important features of these UMA or PIMVS in the state of Yucatán. The database of the offices of the Yucatan delegation of SEMARNAT was obtained and a matrix was elaborated to generate information with relevant data of the units, they were grouped into blocks of five years and the behavior of the growth curve of the number was evaluated. of new units for 25 years. It can be seen that since their creation, the UMAs and PIMVS have incorporated new wildlife units, with the last period showing a significant increase compared to the four previous periods, with a geometric trend. There is also a greater number of UMA and PIMVS privately owned and intensive. It is concluded that the new UMA or PIMVS in Yucatan from 2017 to 2022 increase significantly; the new UMAs of intensive modality and private property are the majority, therefore it can be deduced that there is a sector of the population in Yucatan with a marked interest in carrying out the management and conservation of wildlife.
