Knowledge of students in the 5th year of basic education on topics related to environmental conservation and recycling

The deficient management of urban solid waste has become a serious pollution problem that affects the quality of air, water, and soil, with a negative impact on living beings: plants, animals, and humans. It is therefore of great importance to implement environmental education strategies from the first years of training in educational systems. In Mexico, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) in coordination with the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) has promoted environmental education actions in schools. The objective of the qualitative research was to identify the knowledge of the 5th grade students of basic education in two government schools located in areas with a medium-low socioeconomic level in the city of Xalapa de Enríquez, in the state of Veracruz on topics related to environmental conservation and recycling as a strategy for the sustainable management of urban waste. An ethnographic design was carried out that included the survey and observation as information gathering techniques for the description and analysis of the data. The results showed that the students have a basic knowledge about waste management and recycling as actions for the conservation of natural resources, for which it was recommended to implement an environmental education program with the support of students from the Universidad Veracruzana.
