Abstract

Mangroves, vital ecosystems in Mexico, stand out for their biodiversity and ecosystem services. Due to their extension and difficulty of access, remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems facilitate their study at a landscape scale. In order to delimit and estimate the area occupied by mangroves in Tuxpan, Veracruz, this study used high-resolution satellite images from the PlanetScope service. The scene was processed with ENVI v5.3 software, prior to analysis, the image was worked with an atmospheric correction, orthorectified and in cartographic projection.  A supervised classification analysis was performed using the maximum likelihood algorithm. The mangrove ecosystem in Tuxpan is reported to have an area of 47.8 km2, which represents 5% of the area relative to the size of the municipality. This research provides more detail on the extent of Tuxpan's mangroves and serves as a basis for studies comparing changes in mangrove cover over time, as well as for mangrove restoration and conservation projects.
