Effect of bovine somatotropin on reproductive performance of cows synchronized for artificial insemination and embryo transfer under tropical conditions

Abstract

The need for animal protein is growing exponentially worldwide. In cattle production, productivity is based on reproductive efficiency. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of bovine somatotropin on reproductive performance in cows synchronized for artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET) under tropical conditions. The study was carried out in Tamiahua and Tuxpan, Veracruz area. Thirty-eight multiparous beefmaster cows without a calf were used for the AI study and 80 F1 cows (Brahman x Swiss) with and without a calf for the TE study. Cows were assigned: 1) Control, and 2) Somatotropin (500 mg). Cows for AI were inseminated at fixed-time and recipients were transferred on day 7 after synchronized estrus if they presented a corpus luteum (CL). The presence of a CL and pregnancy diagnosis was done using ultrasonography. STATISTICA 7 was used for the statistical analysis. The somatotropin AI cows had a higher (P<0.05) percentage of pregnancies (80.0%) than the control cows (66.7%). In the TE group, an interaction (P<0.05) treatment x presence of calf was found in the percentages of CL's and pregnancies. The somatotropin cows with a calf had higher percentages of CL's (79.2%) and pregnancies (57.9%) than the control cows (50.0% and 36.4%, respectively). There were no differences between groups in cows without a calf. In conclusion, bovine somatotropin used in cows synchronized in tropical conditions for artificial insemination and embryo transfer improved reproductive performance mainly in cows for TE with a calf.
