Failure is defined as the inability of a student to obtain a minimum grade necessary to pass an evaluation or a specific academic period. Higher education schools have a high failure rate, which highlights a problem of educational quality. Objective: To identify the causes of failure of the students in a Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, of the Veracruzana University, in the period of February-June 2022. Methodology: Non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional quantitative study, with non-probabilistic sampling for convenience, with 78 participants. The instrument causes of failure in university students was applied with 24 items divided into three dimensions: factors inherent to the student, the teacher and the socioeconomic level. Results: the average age was 20 years, predominating the sex of men. 72% responded that they failed due to the poor organization of their study time, 51% mentioned that it was because the teaching-learning methods are not varied, 44% attributed it to working to pay for their studies and/or support their family. Conclusions: The causes of failure of the students of the Faculty of Electrical Mechanical Engineering (FIME) are for not organizing the time to study and do homework, lack of varied teaching and learning methods, work to study and support the family.
