Medicinal plants are species that contain substances used for therapeutic purposes and can serve as precursors for the synthesis of new drugs. In the present work, an ethnobotanical and toxicological study of medicinal plants of greater importance was carried out in the town of Tlalchi, Ixhuacán de los Reyes in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. 22 species were registered distributed in 17 families, highlighting Asteraceae with the highest frequency number. The selected species were Solanum nigrum, Bidens pilosa, Tithonia diversifolia, Commelina diffusa, Justicia pectoralis and Aldama dentata, them have the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenes and saponins. Solanum nigrum had higher toxicity of 51.72 μg/mL. This last species had toxicity in the HeLa cell line, obtaining a 50% reduction in cell viability after 24 h; S. nigrum could be a potential anti-proliferative agent in this type of cells.
