Heavy metals (Ba, Cu and Hg) in tissues of Mugil curema (Valenciennes, 1836) in the Tampamachoco Lagoon in Veracruz, Mexico

At the global level, coastal lagoons are considered as being as a high production environments as well as a high richness in biodiversity. They are located along the littoral, which in the majority of the cases, has a permanent community with the sea like the Tampamachoco Lagoon in Veracruz State. Biologically, the coastal and marine zone of the Gulf of Mexico represents a great ecological and economic value for Mexico because, it has a great diversity of marine ecosystems and natural resources. Heavy metals are natural elements of the earth crust, rocks, soils, sediments, volcanic eruption and of the water. There are some changes in their concentrations due to the extensive use in industry and human activities. The objective of this research is to determine the existence of heavy metals such as Ba, Cu y Hg in organisms of lebrancha (Mugil curema Valenciennes, 1836). Fish were sampled for the quantitative analysis of the heavy metals. The method used was based on the Official Mexican Regulation NOM-117-SSA1-1994 by means of the technique “Spectrometry of atomic absorption”. 14 samples were done from 2009 to 2010. The average concentration in tissues for the muscles was Ba= 9.66 mg/kg, Cu= 3.33 mg/kg; in skin was Ba= 14.40 mg/kg, Cu= 6.28 mg/kg; in gill was Ba= 43.26 mg/kg, Cu= 8.13 mg/kg; and finally in liver was Ba= 7.57 mg/kg, Cu= 25.99 mg/kg. The concentrations found in the M. curema tissues, mainly in the gill, are the main tissue of collection of the heavy metals because breathing is a determine factor in the bioaccumulation of these pollutants.
