Presence of Lead and Cadmium in Ariopsis guatemalensis (Günter, 1864), in the Tres Palos Lagoon, Guerrero, Mexico

The deterioration in the quality of the environmental and the loss of ichthyological biodiversity are the result of numerous human activities, including commercial fishing, water sports, etc. Lagoons consist of a shore-line body of water with a mouth and a sand bar (Violante-González, 2007). The Laguna de Tres Palos lagoon complex, the largest in the state of Guerrero, is located 25 km. from the port of Acapulco. The lagoon has a wide diversity of fish and a fisheries production of 900 metric tons/year (Violante-González, 2007). The aim of this study was to record the concentration of Pb and Cd in Ariopsis guatemalensis. Samplings were taken four times: in April, June and October 2011 and April 2012; 30 fish were collected in each sample, frozen, and then transported to the laboratory where they were dissected, separating the gills, muscle, skin, liver and viscera. Subsequently, each type of tissue was dehydrated in an oven until dry weight and the samples were processed according to EPA method 3052 to quantify the Pb and Cd in the different organs. Concentrations of Pb (1.0 mg/kg) and Cd (0.5 mg/kg) exceeded the permissible limits of NOM-027-SSA1-1993. Because Pb and Cd can biomagnify (Golovanova, 2008), it is important to monitor these elements to ensure the quality of fish that comes from this area, particularly because of its commercial importance for human consumption.
