Abstract

Introduction: the syndrome of “burnout” which is also called the chronic fatigue syndrome is described as a manifestation of work stress and it is conceptualized as a three dimensional syndrome. The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of the “burnout” syndrome in hospital nurses during the February – May term in 2013. Methodology: comparative, descriptive and cross study. The study group were 60 hospital nurses of second level of attention divided into two groups; group “A” 30 single nurses and group “B” 30 married nurses. By means of a census a questionnaire was given including general data, the scale of Maslach burnout inventory of 22 items and an informed consent. A social sciences statistic program was used in its version 19.0. Results: it was found that in the “A” group the “burnout” syndrome was present in the following issues, depersonalization indicator in 27%, emotional fatigue in 36.5% and a low sense of professional accomplishment in 53%, the group “B” presented the “burnout” syndrome as well, depersonalization indicator in 56 %, emotional fatigue 20 %, and a low sense of professional accomplishment in 40%. Conclusions: the single nurses perceive a higher percentage of professional accomplishment than the married nurses who find themselves less depersonalized.
