Sugarcane, a slow-growing plant, faces developmental challenges due to competition from faster, more vigorous weeds during its first 5-6 months of life. Lack of planting density and wide row spacing exacerbate this problem. To address this challenge, an integrated weed management approach is employed, which includes the study of the weed species present and their critical periods of competition.
This approach involves a combination of practices, from land preparation to the use of crop residues, with the objective of minimizing weed competition. To carry out effective weed management, it is essential to know the main weed species in the area of influence of the sugarcane plantation.
In this context, the present project has identified the ten main weeds of the Poaceae type that compete with sugar cane in the area of influence of the "La Providencia, S. A. de C. V". In addition, the study provides detailed information on these weeds, including their description, distribution, propagation and importance in the context of sugarcane cultivation. This knowledge is essential to develop effective weed management strategies and maximize crop productivity.
