Abstract

An investigation into bovine cattle in the form of direct and descriptive observation was carried out in the state of Veracruz with the aim of evaluating certain animal health indicators by analyzing four UPP data using intensive and semi-intensive grazing using field rotation. A total of 305 cows were used for this dual purpose study of milking herds. The study was divided into two parts. In the first part the animal based health indicators were recorded and in the second part a survey was applied that documented environmental indicators present. For the flight zone indicator it was found significant differences (p=0.004) between the UPP´s, the UPP Villa Alpina showed a minor flight zone (1.4 mts. ± 0.12) while the UPP Las Norma’s resulted with (2.2 mts. ± 0.16). The rate of the corporal condition were where differences of more than (p= <.0001) were present, resulting the UPP Las 3 A where the cows presented the lowest rate of the corporal condition (2.7 ± 0.28) and the UPP El Coco with the highest rate (3.9 ± 0.032). 50% of the UPP´s estimated to have mortality of 3 to 5% caused for Diarrheas of multifactorial causes. 100% of the sample cattle showed a register of sickness and to have a preventive medicine program and the 50% of the milking it was made with calf presence. Knowing and understanding cattle behavior is going to permit the application of management strategies to drive an increase in animal health and obtain high quality products.
