This article analyzes the influence of emotional intelligence on the academic performance of students at the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo. The central axis of analysis consisted of the study of emotional intelligence in its diverse historical and current conceptions. The cultural complexity of the origin of the students in the interior of the country is taken as a reference. It is argued that emotional intelligence directly affects school performance in two possible ways, positively or negatively depending on the awareness and degree of orientation of the students. It is concluded that the education of emotional intelligence is so necessary as a very important means to stop school desertion and at the same time to promote self-knowledge of emotional intelligence among the students of the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo.
