Abstract

The native maize (Zea mays L.) pigmented, have taken importance, due to its interesting nutraceutical properties, besides being an alternative of a crop with an added value for the industry, for these reasons, a test with a native red maize, In acid and low fertility soils of southern Veracruz, with the objective of evaluating their behavior under these conditions and determining their productive potential. A randomized complete block experimental design with four replications and two treatments, T1 = average plants, representative of the population and T2 = upper plants, with desirable characteristics for high yield, was used. We used the technique of Analysis of Variance and the comparison of means by Tukey 0.05. The results showed a high variability in growth and yield per plant. However yields per ha were satisfactory, 3,490 and 6,514 kg ha-1, for the average plants and the higher plants, respectively. This demonstrates its high genetic potential, as these yields were obtained under adverse conditions of acid soils and low fertility and the presence of a severe, atypical drought that occurred in that crop cycle.
