Abstract

We conducted a study to assess the percentage of germination, growth, biomass, moisture and organic matter under different substrates in mahogany Swietenia macrophylla King in the Michapan river. It was used a completely randomized design with four replicates for germination percentage, height, diameter, biomass, moisture retention and organic matter content. The substrates that were used for these variables were: 1) 100% black soil, 2) vermicompost 100%, 3) 100% peat moss, 4) black soil + vermicompost 50% 50%, 5) black soil peat moss 50% + 50%, 6) + vermicompost 50% peat moss 50%, and 7) black earth 33% + 33% vermicompost + 33% peat moss. The results of the analyzes of variance showed highly significant differences in the substrates. Based on the comparison test of Tukey showed that the best substrate was the treatment 7) black soil vermicompost 33% + 33% + 33% peat moss, to obtain favorable results in% germination, initial growth, and biomass and soil characteristics in tropical forest species mahogany Swietenia macrophylla King.
