This article addresses the importance of diagnosis in educational planning and intervention, through conceptual variants, which determine the aim of the study and its scope. At the center of analysis are the purposes of the educational diagnosis as well as the purposes of its implementation. It is argued that studies are as complex as the clarity and breadth of their purposes, consequently, the most appropriate means for carrying out the educational diagnosis must be congruent with the purposes, the analysis variants and the spatial level where the educational actors work. Given the characteristics of the diagnostic study, it can be enriched with several methodological tools that allow more assertive conclusions for educational intervention.
Keywords: Educational actors, spatial level.
