The state of Chihuahua is one of the main walnut producers nationwide in the north of the country, even competing with the United States. Each year this production has increased due to the potential demand it has. Farmers are allocating their hectares to other crops, to walnut production and even ranchers are converting land use change. Due to this situation, companies discard large quantities of walnut shells without any regulations. Therefore, the objective was to analyze the technical investment to obtain activated carbon for the purification of drinking water through the walnut shell. The methodology was aimed at the two sectors involved using process engineering strategies, with a sample of 4 water purifying companies and 5 walnut processors. As a result, it was obtained that it is viable to make activated carbon from walnut shell for water purification. The raw material is sufficient since to produce a kilo of activated carbon 2 kilos of walnut shell are needed, therefore, 8 tons of shell would be used per month, to meet the demand of 4 tons of activated carbon per month required by the water purifiers.
